休日の早朝、新宿から首都高4号そして中央高速と走ると2時間ちょっとで標高1200M以上ある八ヶ岳山麓に着く。森の中に10箇所ほど定番の撮影スポットがあるので、その日の気分で場所を選びクーラーボックスからビールを取り出す。前夜サティが準備した唐揚げとか卵焼きをほおばる。サティはたいてい文庫本を読んでいる。ほろ酔いで撮影すると高速の東京方面が渋滞する前に撤収する。帰りの運転はサティ。スポーティタイプの6MT車だがサティは運転がうまい。高速の巡航速度はしばしばボクより速い。「スピード出すな」などと言いながら、助手席でカメラのモニタを繰ってその日のショットをチェックする。極楽ゴクラクの休日だが、それに付き合うサティが偉い。
On an early weekend morning, a drive from Shinjuku via the Shuto Expressway Route 4 and the Chuo Expressway takes just over two hours to reach the foothills of the Yatsugatake Mountains, sitting at an elevation of over 1,200 meters. There are about ten classic photography spots scattered through the woods; I pick one based on my mood and pull a beer from the cooler. I munch on the *karaage* (fried chicken) and *tamagoyaki* (rolled omelet) that Satie prepared the night before, while she usually spends the time reading a paperback. After taking photos with a pleasant buzz, we pack up and head back before the traffic jams hit the highway lanes leading into Tokyo. Satie does the driving on the way home. It’s a sporty car with a six-speed manual transmission, but she handles it skillfully—often cruising at higher speeds than I do. While telling her not to drive too fast, I sit in the passenger seat, scrolling through the camera’s monitor to check the day’s shots. It’s a blissful holiday, and Satie deserves a lot of credit for going along with it.
